I am proud to serve District 26 in the State Senate. Ours is a large and diverse district and I am dedicated to working for ALL our citizens. When I talk to people about the things they care about I’m reminded that there is far more that unites us than divides us. I will work hard for you to improve our education system, support businesses and workers, make healthcare more affordable and accessible, and reform state government so it works for you. I pledge to always serve with honesty and integrity and to show each and every person the respect they deserve.

The issues

Lowering the tax burden on our hard-working citizens

By implementing top-to-bottom tax reform we can find new revenue sources while lowering taxes for South Carolinians. Taking a new and modern approach to our tax system will put more money back in your pockets. Tourism is one of our state’s top industries and capitalizing on the millions of visitors we welcome each year is key to accessing more funds for needed services while lowering taxes for our own residents.
Expanding access to healthcare and improving outcomes

It’s well past time for Medicaid Expansion in South Carolina. For over 14 years our taxpayers have sent money to Washington to pay for this program without seeing one cent in return. We have some of the worst health issues in the country. South Carolinians are funding better health services in 40 other states – we deserve the same access to quality healthcare, allowing us to live longer, healthier lives.
Improving education

For too long South Carolina schools have lagged behind almost every other state. I believe that providing children with a quality education is a core function of state government that, when done well, has positive impacts on many other problems plaguing our state. We spend far too much time discussing plans, like private school vouchers, that will only affect a small number of students while the 80% of children who will graduate from our public schools fall farther behind. It’s time to fully fund public education, look to what’s working elsewhere and bring those methods to South Carolina schools and make sure each student has an equal chance to succeed.
Support small business and protect workers

South Carolinians are good, hard-working people — all they ask for is a fair shake — just a shot to do the best they can for themselves and their families. Government should do its best to help set everyone up for success and then get out of the way. This means making sure small businesses can afford to stay open in the face of a rapidly changing economy, and that workers can earn enough money to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table.
Developing a common-sense approach to energy policy

The rising cost of energy is squeezing South Carolina households, and with our rapidly growing population these pressures are not going to ease any time soon. Creating greater transparency and better oversight in the energy sector will be critical in lowering costs for consumers. Steps we took to punish SCANA officials who defrauded taxpayers have helped reform the system to prevent future abuse, but we can do more. We must improve access to affordable and reliable energy today while we explore the possibility of more renewable options in the future.
Protecting our farmers and rural communities

Agribusiness is South Carolina’s biggest economic sector. Supporting the men and women who put food on our tables and clothes on our backs is critical not only to meeting our basic needs, but to growing our economy and creating jobs in the years ahead. I will continue to work to preserve the way of life we have come to enjoy in our rural communities while expanding economic opportunities for the people who, like me, make their home in the country.

Meet Russell

Russell Ott is a lifelong resident of South Carolina. Born and raised in the Center Hill community of Calhoun County he is the proud dad to two sons, Lawson and Bryce. Russell was raised on the family farm, where he continues to work with his father, uncle and brother growing corn, cotton and soybeans.

Before being elected to the State Senate in 2024, he served 11 years in the SC House of Representatives where he earned a reputation as a hard-working, problem solver.
